During the fall my family gets big into the apple harvest. We go to the local orchard and get cider and fresh apple juice. I love hot apple cider donuts in the morning and relaxing in the cool evenings with hot apple cider in a mug with a cinnamon stirring stick. Simply put: Apples remind me of the fall.

And yet it's spring - today is our baseball team's home opener - and I've been talking about Apples quite a bit. Last week Garmin announced the upgrade of the previous Pilot MyCast to the new Garmin Pilot app for the iPad and iPhone. Since then the phones and inbox have been filled with questions about Apples.

AC-U-KWIK Data Now Available for Garmin Glass Flight Decks

Now pilots with Garmin glass have another way to get their airport information all around the world. We just announced that we’re now offering electronic AC-U-KWIK airport directory data on our glass flight decks. This data is now available for G500, G600, G500H, G3X, G300, G900X, G950, G1000, G1000H, G2000, G3000 and G5000 systems.

The AC-U-KWIK data contains a directory of more than 7,800 airports globally, and contains hard-to-find information for pre-flight planning in North America, Europe, Asia, Central America, the Caribbean, South America, Africa and Australia. Users have detailed information at their fingertips – information like FBOs and handlers, fuel providers, customs information, ground transportation, charter companies, catering services and more.

Garmin at Sun ‘n Fun: Day 2

With sunny skies, 80-degree weather and no storms in sight, this is a whole different Sun 'n Fun from last year. The week-long event kicked off yesterday, and while there are still memories of the 2011 tornado, pilots have come out in full force to enjoy what has come to be known as "spring break for pilots". We're here at the show and already having a blast. Here's what's going on this year inside the Garmin booth:

Victor’s Vectors: Get your GTN pilot training at Garmin HQ

The first weekend of GTN pilot training is complete. Several pilots from around the country made the trip to Garmin’s Headquarters in Olathe, Kansas for a full weekend of class work on the operation of the GTN series. During this 2-day training session, participants had the opportunity to get hands-on access to the GTN series with a Garmin product trainer by their side to teach them about the features and how to operate the avionics. The next session in June is already full, but there are still some openings in the two other sessions on August 24th-25th and December 7th-8th. Victor’s Vectors: Your aviation database questions answered!

It is the information age, and information permeates every part of our lives, especially our cockpits. Garmin avionics provide valuable flight information from a variety of data sources including aviation navigational data, obstacle data, SafeTaxi data, airport directory data and more. So when it comes to keeping all of that information up-to-date it is no wonder that pilots get a little lost. The first question I get is how often does all this information get updated? To answer that question, check out flyGarmin.com where there is a chart showing the release dates and cycles for each of the databases in your favorite avionics. The next question I hear is how do I update the information? I recommend reading the Pilot’s Guide and viewing the flyGarmin.com instructional videos. You can also check out this video specifically about updating databases for the G1000, G500, and G600. Then, the obvious next question is how much is it going to cost? Check out our online pricing guide to learn more about the cost of database updates and bundled database packages like PilotPak. My hope is that this information acts as a guide (magenta line for those familiar with Garmin GPS systems) to assist those lost in information overload walk the path to informational security.

Victor’s Vectors: GTN 635, 625 and 725 now available!

The GTN 750 and GTN 650 were announced and available for shipping March 23 when Garmin unveiled them at the Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA) Convention. Also announced at that time were the GTN 635, GTN 625, and GTN 725. As of July 1st these GTN models are now available for purchase and shipping. So what is the difference between the different GTN models? Basically, the GTN 625 and GTN 725 are GPS only, while the GTN 635 is a GPS/COM. The GTN 650 and GTN 750 are GPS/NAV/COM. For a more detailed list of the differences I’ve included a comparison chart from the GTN mini-site. The GTN 625 is priced at $9,595, the GTN 635 at $10,495, and the GTN 725 at $15,000. Now the full line of GTN models are available in a price range for your budget, so to start your panel upgrade visit a Garmin Aviation Dealer near you.
