Also, one of the most frequent questions we've heard is "Why did Garmin go with off-board maps that are downloaded from a server, and not on-board maps that live on the device?"  The benefit of off-board maps are that users have the most up-to-date mapping data available at all times. Many customers appreciate this feature because they're confident that their maps will always be current, regardless of when they downloaded the app from iTunes.

It's day one of CES and the Garmin booth has been packed. Also on display at CES is the new Chrysler uConnect in-dash navigation system, the dezl truck navigators with truck-specific points of interest from the NTTS Breakdown Directory, and the 5-inch nuvi 2400 series with a range of advanced features. A number of new Garmin mobile applications- including the StreetPilot for iPhone, Garmin Tracker, myMechanic and My-Cast Lite - will also be on display in the Garmin booth. • Automotive and Truck: The nüvi® 2400 series for automobiles and dēzl™ for trucks have a large 5-inch display and advanced navigation features specific to their markets, such as voice recognition and truck routes, respectively.
• Tracking: The GTU 10 is an innovative, reliable and simple tracking system that lets users track the things that mean the most. It is small and lightweight and can be used to track nearly anything – child, pet, boat, car or more.
• Mobile: Several new smartphone apps are being announced for the Android and Apple platforms. These apps include navigation, weather, tracking, car diagnostics, and more.
• Automotive OEM: The uConnect Touch, available on an array of Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles, puts Garmin's nüvi-like consumer experience into an original equipment, in-dash radio.

Somehow Christmas crept up on me this year. And in less than two months, Valentine's Day will do the same. Then birthdays, graduations ... makes a guy want to hire a personal assistant just to keep an eye on the calendar and have gift ideas on demand. Well, I can't afford a minion, but there is help for me ... and it's free at the App Store.

The new Garmin Countdown app tells me when (and how quickly) important dates and events are approaching. I can personalize it by adding birthdays, anniversaries, housewarming parties, anything where I should probably be present with a present. It’s quick. It’s easy. And it makes me look smarter than I am.

Garmin Countdown gives me reminders about specific details regarding that event, suggests gifts for any occasion, and lets me add notes of my own (like when I'm given subtle clues about what should go on a wish list... six months before the holiday arrives).

The Android-powered Garminfone received 3.5 out of 5 stars from PC World magazine. Kudos was given throughout the review for different capabilities and features, but one of the many accolades is that it's a good bang for the buck. "The Garminfone has the full functionality of a Garmin navigation device built in--plus all the advantages of an Android-based smartphone. In other words, it's as good as any dedicated GPS device on the market, and it's a better value than, say, buying a comparably priced Android phone and then paying another $100 for navigation software (which will lack the integration that Garmin has put into this phone)." 

PC World was also impressed with the navigation features, "side-by-side with Google's free navigation service...the Garminfone was quicker and more accurate in showing the position of my vehicle. In comparison with other phone/navigation-software models, the Garminfone is better at picking up the GPS signal, something that Garmin's designers say they worked hard to achieve."
