After a number of several impressive handsets offered by LG in the past couple of years, they are at it once more with the LG Venus VX8800, or known simply as the LG Venus. And Venus could not have been a more fitting name as this little device screams beauty and grace when viewed at any angle. It has a uniquely designed dual display with a touch sensitive screen. And what we love in its design is extended all the way under its skin. It has loads of features that will definitely make this phone a must have for those looking for a mobile phone with both beauty and brains, so to speak.

For starters, the Venus has the capacity for one thousand contacts which has room for five phone numbers and two email addresses each. Contacts can be organized into caller groups and embed each with their respective photos and any of the sixteen ring tones available. Other important features such as text and multimedia messaging, a calendar and alarm clock – even a world clock, a notepad, calculator, speaker phone and voice memo recorder.

Aside from those usual assortments of mobile phone features, other high end capabilities are also offered by the Venus. These include and are not limited to: Email messaging, instant messaging, USB mass storage functionalities, stereo Bluetooth, Web browser and PC Syncing. And not only that, the Venus also supports 3G, utilizing the great services of EV-DO.

The Venus of course comes with its own music player which supports most popular formats such as MP3, AAC, eAAC, and WMA. The player interface looks neat and has onscreen music controls. Like dedicated media players, the Venus can display album art when a track is being played. The tracks are organized by artist, album and genre automatically, and you may even create your own user playlists. Playback options like shuffle and repeat are also offered. While the sound on the Venus is already exceptional on its own, the user may also apply any of the eleven equalizer presets. Unlike most handsets that offers music playback that shares its memory with the phones other functions, the Venus has a music only dedicated memory of 64 MB right out of the box. And if that proves to be insufficient in the long run, you can add more storage with the use of the expansion slot which supports up to eight gigabytes of microSD.

LG Venus Camera and Display

The LG Venus comes with an integrated 2 mega pixel camera that has capabilities of taking still pictures in four different resolutions – 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 960, 640 x 480 and a minimum of 320 x 240 pixels. It also boasts of photo editing capabilities and options for five white balance settings, spot metering, up to five color effects and three different shutter sounds with a silent option. The lens is also capable of zooming in your subjects digitally, albeit at only 2x. Picture quality with the Venus' camera was also quite good, without the tendency for blurred edges and has accurate and vivid colors.

The lens also doubles its use as a camcorder and it does so with two video resolution options, namely 320 x 240 and 176 x 144 pixels, which can be easily toggled depending on the needs of the user. Image editing options for photos are almost the same with the camcorder functions of the Venus, so the user may tweak videos further. For multimedia messaging purposes, the LG Venus limits video clips to thirty seconds only, which is sufficient for most users. Otherwise, you may capture video for as much as sixty seconds, provided of course the memory can handle it. Video quality was not very satisfactory though and the user should be well advised to keep hands steady as the Venus can not handle fast movements, lest you want to end up watching blurred and jerky home movies.

LG Venus Design and Accessories

As mentioned earlier, the design of the LG Venus looks very impressive. In fact it somewhat resembles the LG Prada which has a full three inch display. The Venus on the other hand has two display screens, with the top being your regular QVGA primary screen while the one at the bottom is the very pleasing touch sensitive screen which houses the Venus' navigation array. Together with the dual screen, the phone's svelte figure, and the luxurious leather-like material covering the back, the Venus looks very sleek and stylish and may fit both male and female users alike. Those skeptical with the touch sensitive controls of this unit need only to experience it once to become converts as the screen needs a firm touch to activate so unintentional pressing of keys do not happen easily.

What sets the LG Venus from other stylish handsets is that this one looks rather minimalist, relying heavily on the understated elegance fashion statement.

Summary of LG Venus Features

PROS: The LG Venus totally lives up to its name and looks very stylish and beautiful. The camera produces good still images and the dedicated music memory is more than what competitors can offer. Its unique dual screen design also has a nice and user friendly navigation controls.

CONS: Touch sensitivity settings would have been greatly useful. Also the camera has no flash and videos leave a lot to be desired.

Overall: A beautiful slider phone all around and with its great features will surely end up in a lot of consumers wish list.

Samsung SGH-T809 Samsung follows in Motorola's footsteps with the SGH-T809, and does a very good job of it, much to the chagrin of consumers looking for other slim handsets without having to buy Motorola's flagship phone, the RAZR, since it seems everybody already have. Unlike the RAZR though, the T809 is a slider phone and as such, the slimness seemed like a miracle. And do not get fooled by its size as the T809 is mightily packed with great features that would definitely inspire a purchase consideration for many people. The T809's svelte features can not be appreciated fully when viewed straight on though, as this view makes it look a bit bulky. That is until you start turning it to its side when its 1.52 cm thickness makes you wonder how so many features can be crammed in such a slim handset.

The Samsung T809 comes with its own MP3 player and can playback tracks that are stored on either the internal shared memory or on the expansion slot TransFlash card. In fact MP3 files may be transferred between the two memory cards so organizing your music files are easier. And speaking of organizing, the user can also organize the tracks into playlists so the user can listen to tracks according to his / her mood. And transferring your tracks from the computer to your phone has never been more efficient as you may do so wirelessly via the T809's Bluetooth connectivity, provided of course that your computer is also Bluetooth capable.

Samsung SGH-T809 Camera and Display

The Samsung SGH-T809 is equipped with a 1.3 mega pixel camera that can take photos in seven resolutions – a maximum of 1280 x 1024, 1152 x 864, 800 x 600, 640 x 480, 320 x 240, 240 x 320 and the minimum resolution of 240 x 180. It does not have a flash option though so taking photos in dark environments even with the night mode setting is not advisable. A redeeming factor with the T809's lens is that it can be swiveled from back to front. This is especially useful for when taking pictures of oneself, as all camera phone and digital phone users are fond of doing.

Aside from this the T809's photo capabilities are also crammed. One will find the usual photo editing features such as the ability to choose from 29 fun frames, picture effects of which the T809 has nine, up to ten seconds self timer, up to 15 photos in multi-shot mode, different brightness settings, mosaic shot options, white-balance and image orientation adjustments, and metering exposure (ISO settings).

The user can also choose between four viewfinder sizes which is a rarely found feature among camera phones. And for taking pictures of far away subjects, the lens of the T809 can zoom in up to 8x digitally. There are also options or up to five shutter sound effects, although there is no silent option which is quite frustrating. All the number keys on the T809 has specific shortcuts for the camera options although they are quite a lot to memorize and may take some time. All of it is listed in the user manual of course but it's not really convenient to lug around. But with all the camera features on the T809, the picture quality still was not among the best we have seen as images tend to be fuzzy. Still, for a camera phone, pictures are quite sufficient and whatever it lacks in quality may easily be overlooked once the fun factor starts.

Aside from stills, the camera on the T809 may also function as a camcorder and can capture videos in two resolutions: 128 x 96 and 176 x 144. Video length is of course dependent on the memory size available but videos taken for the purposes of multimedia messaging are limited to up to thirty seconds only. The photo editor shares the same options with the video capabilities of the T809, meaning the image versatility you get with photos are the same with videos. As expected though, the captured videos look a bit grainy even when set at the maximum resolution. For use as a video or multimedia message though, it serves its purpose well.

All photos and video clips are saved in the T809's internal shared memory of 70 MB though so the expansion slot can be quite handy. It is good to note that the T809 comes with a 32 MB TransFlash card upon purchase so you don't have to get one right away.

Samsung SGH-T809 Design and Accessories

As stated above, the Samsung T809 although a tad thicker, seems to borrow its design from Motorola. And it does so to good effect. Sliding this handset open is a pleasing experience and it's so effortless that the user can open it with just one finger. As a default setting the user can answer calls simply by sliding the phone open and end calls by closing the slider down. This may be changed however but I couldn't think of anything more intuitive than what's already the default.

Samsung SGH-T809 Features

Weight: 3.3 oz / 93.6 g

Width: 5.33 cm

Height: 10.16 cm

Thickness: 1.52 cm

Network: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz, GPRS / HSCSD / EDGE / CSD

Screen Resolution: LCD display, TFT, 320 x 240 pixels, 18-bit (262000 Colors)

Data: EDGE Technology

Connectivity: Bluetooth v1.2, USB, PCSync

Web Browser: WAP 2.0 (xHTML)

Music: MP3

Camera: 1.3 mega pixels, 1280 x 1024, Records up to CIF resolution (352 x 288 pixels) / 3GPP format

Messaging: EMS, MMS, Yes. ICQ, Yahoo! Messenger, Wireless Village 1.1, AOL Instant Messenger Service (AIM)

Expansion Slot: MicroSD

Tones: Polyphonic, Vibrating Alert

Software Features: Java (J2ME)

Other Features: Calendar, To-Do List, Streaming Video

Battery: Lithium Ion 800 mAh, 4.3 hours talk time, 130 hours stand by time

PROS: Although the T809 will always be thought of as a Motorola clone, there is no denying that its svelte design may be its biggest selling point. The 32MB TransFlash expansion card, although not much is a nice addition to the package especially considering that other phones offer nothing upon purchase. The MP3 player is also more than satisfactory. The slider can also be opened effortlessly.

CONS: The camera is obviously not the T809's biggest strengths and picture and video quality can use some improvement. And it would have been easily forgivable had it not been for the hefty price tag of this handset.

Overall: After all is said and done, the T809 is a fun and functional mobile phone to carry around. And with its slim build, mobility is not an issue.

The Motorola RIZR Z3 is being tagged by most people as the slide version of the very popular Motorola RAZR phones. And rightly so as the RIZR Z3 does resemble the build and character of the RAZR and even share a lot with regards to its looks and function. It must be noted that the RIZR Z3 is the first slider design from Motorola to be offered to the European and American market.

It is a handset that is both pleasing to view and hold as it is a great piece of technology engulfed by steel and rubber casing, giving it a very solid and sturdy feel, regardless of its dimensions. Although definitely not the world's slimmest phone, which Samsung probably holds the record to, to make a slider with such a dimension of only 16 mm thin is quite an achievement and definitely holds its own.

A lot of the functions that previous users of Motorola, especially the RAZR and MOTOKZR series can still be found here. The RIZR Z3 shares the same specifications of the KRZR with the design element being the most obvious difference. The advantage of the RIZR Z3's design is that most of the functions can be accessed even when the unit is slid shut, thanks to the 5 way navigation pad that is situated on the RIZR Z3's facade when the slider is closed. Even the voice commands and camera buttons are easily accessed at the side of the unit.

Motorola RIZR Z3 Camera and Display

The Motorola RIZR Z3 is equipped with a two mega pixel camera that can both function as a digital camera or a camcorder. Pictures can be captured at a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels, enough for all around use and may prove to be handy when the need for quick photo documentation arises. The camera on the RIZR Z3 is rather straightforward and easy to use and most people will have no trouble fiddling with it. It also has the basic features we have all come to expect from digital cameras and camera phones alike, such as color schemes, image rotation, frame insertions, contrast settings and brightness. The camera also supports different popular image formats so the user can choose which format suits him best.

With regards to the output, the images come out smooth with not much noise that is expected from two mega pixel and below camera phones. Although the colors can use a bit more vibrancy, as the images tend to look dull and uninspiring. It does however have fun and useful features such as the six color effects, multishot option, adjustable exposure settings, a self timer, 8x optical zoom

Video captured with the RIZR Z3's camera utilizes the increasingly popular 3gp format or the mpeg4 format with a choice of 176 x 144 and 128 x 96 pixels. The length of recording videos is dependent of course to the available memory.

The screen display on the RIZR Z3 is at 176 x 220 pixels or 1.9 inches, which is relatively larger than most phones of its class. The improvement from the 65,000 colors of the KRZR's screen to that of the RIZR Z3's 262,000 is very apparent as images can be viewed better and even the text is more legible.

Motorola RIZR Z3 Design and Accessories

At only 16 mm thick, the RIZR Z3 is rather one of the thinnest mobile phones out in the market, especially when taking into consideration that this is a slider phone. The five way navigation key is nicely raised above the phone's surface making it easier to operate and not fumble around with it. What's more is that the toggle can be programmed as user defined functions making the phone adapt to the user's needs. The other keys on the façade such as the clear, talk, web browser and power buttons though is not as user friendly as the navigation key as they are not spaced out much and are rather small. This is especially hard for those with bigger fingers.

Being a slider phone, one of the things users usually check is the assembly of the top (screen) and bottom (keypad) panels of the phone, whether it creaks and feels flimsy or is it built to last. No need to worry about that with the RIZR Z3 as the spring activated slider on this phone is quite sturdy without the squeaks and creaks normally present with slider phones. The steel and rubber casing adds to this phone's sturdy and stable feel. Plus the weight of the RIZR Z3 makes handling the phone feel more solid, which at 115 grams does not really weigh that much even compared to phones of its class.

For transferring your files such as mp3's or images even without a wireless computer setup, the RIZR Z3 ships with a USB cable and moving files from the phone to your computer and vice-versa is close to effortless. And with an expanded memory of 1 Gigabyte, you can easily fit in as much as 1,000 songs give or take. The card slot though is behind the battery cover and together with the SIM card could be a tricky process to pry out or slip in.

Summary of Motorola RIZR Z3 Features

PROS: The slim and stylish design is definitely an attraction, and quite sturdy at such a small dimension at that. Features are quite ample for both work and fun. The spring loaded slider's build is solid and feels as though it would last for a very long time.

CONS: The picture quality with its 2 mega pixel camera, although fine leaves a lot to be desired. Especially with it's lackluster color. The memory expansion slot and SIM card slot is rather hard to access.

Overall: The Motorola RIZR Z3 is a trendy all around handset with plenty of features to keep those fingers busy for a while. It does have its shortcomings but once you weigh it against the pros and the fun starts, whatever is lacking can easily be overlooked. All in all, the Motorola RIZR Z3 is a great little package worthy of its own place in the mobile phone industry and eventually in our pockets.

The LG CU920 is under AT&T. It is built similar to the Prada phone, with its 3 inch wide screen that is touch sensitive. It is said that its US counterpart will be updated with actual 3G support. Indeed, the mobile industry is the fastest growing market today. Various cell phones are being manufactured. It even gets better because pieces of the growing technology are slowly being implemented on the mobile phones that are now sold in the market.

The LG CU920 is no different from other mobiles that are coming out. It has features like video calling and internet capabilities that will pose as a big convenience in your lifestyle. It has camera and video functions that allow you to store unforgettable moments and events in your life. It is microSD compatible, which means that you can save as many memories and data as you like.

LG CU920 Camera and Display

The LG CU920 has an immobile built-in camera with video capabilities as well. Aside from this it has video player functions. It has a resolution of 240 by 400 pixels with an active TFT of about 262,144 colors.

Moreover, you can connect to the outside world via MMS, SMS, E-mail and Instant Messaging. This is because of its advanced internal GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA functions. This is along with its HTML browser. It is even more exciting because the LG CU920 is Bluetooth and USB compatible.
Furthermore, composing text messages and e-mails are now a lot simpler and quicker because of the CU920's predictive text feature. You can make use of your extra time for more important things. Thus, you will not encounter any problems with storing your photos, videos and even data. This is because the LG CU920 is expansion memory enabled. This means that you can have an external memory through a microSD card. Since your music player is also supported with an MP3 function, you can also store as much MP3 music as you like.

For those who love games, you don't need to worry because the LG CU920 is capable of downloading Java games. Aside from that, when on a voice call, you can opt to use its speaker phone function. You can also record voice messages with the LG CU920.

LG CU920 Design and Accessories

The LG CU920 is a handheld mobile that features a 3 inch wide screen that is touch sensitive. It has keys on its front side but it's only a few keys to make use of. Moreover, the LG CU920 comes with a Li-Ion battery that is proven to be long lasting. You can have up to 4 hours of actual talk time and up to 300 hours of actual stand by time.

The LG CU920 also has an internal antenna. It is also roaming enabled. This means that the LG CU920 can be applied for a roaming function via your phone provider. Its 3G technology and quadband attribute makes it very ideal for travel usage. This is because the mobile will attempt to access 4 sites for signal purposes. This is a lot better than the previous dualband and triband attributes. This also means that through its quadband feature, you don't need to worry about losing your signal. You will have better chances of getting a good signal, when traveling, than those who have only dualband and triband phones.

Another good thing about the LG CU920 would be its video calling feature. This function lets you see the person on the other end of the line. This is a very good thing for international business transactions. Aside from that, seeing your loved one on the other end won't cause you too much loneliness just because you are working hundreds of miles away.

Other added features of the LG CU920 would be its organizer functions. This means that the CU920 has capabilities for calendar, calculator, alarm and memo pages. Its phonebook supports caller groups and multiple numbers for each contact function. It is also ring ID and picture ID enabled.

Summary of LG CU920 Features

Pros: The best feature of the LG CU920 would be its internet accessibility, 3G, quadband and video calling capabilities. With its internet access, you can send e-mails and Instant Messages. You can also easily surf for games and videos. With its quadband functions, roaming and signal access is no longer a problem for you when you travel. With its 3G and video calling attributes, you can see the person calling you. This is also a good way to filter the calls you get.

Cons: The LG CU920 has not yet been released in the market. Thus, it will be available sometime soon. There is no current negative remark or feedback given about the CU920. The only thing, for now, would be its black color. It may be best if there are varieties, instead of the usual black casing.

Overall: The LG CU920 has a lot to offer with its 3G and HSDPA tandem. It offers a lot of conveniences, especially for those who travel a lot. This is also one phone you can use for your transactions anywhere in the globe. Many young professionals will really get a good deal with this CU920. It has everything you would want in a modernized mobile. Aside from that, you can actually store as many photos, videos and data as you deem necessary. You can also upload your videos and photos very easily. Aside from the internet, its Bluetooth and USB accessibility will guarantee you safe and faster downloads.
The Samsung SCH-U940 is amongst many of the newly developed mobiles in the 20th century. It has so many features, both internal and external, that will serve as a convenience for the millions of people who use cell phones as a part of their day-to-day lives. Talking to family, friends and business associates is just a snap. This can also be added to the fact that the Samsung SCH-U940 can store up to 1,000 names. Thus, it also provides other means of sending messages. Apart from the usual SMS, you can also send messages via MMS and email. When you are talking to someone, you can opt to put that person on speaker phone.

Moreover, there have been speculations that Samsung SCH-U940, which in the new pride of Verizon; is also the Samsung F700 of Vodaphone. This is because of the many similarities the SCH-U940 and the F700 has. A few of their similarities would include the wide touch-screen attribute; and having just one key in its front surface area. Thus, the Samsung SCH-U940 is an exciting new addition to the sliding-screen type of mobile phones that has a 2MP camera today.

Samsung SCH-U940 Camera and Display

The Samsung SCH-U940 is a recent release and will also be distributed by Verizon Wireless. Its outstanding set up will really amaze everyone, especially the ones in the younger generation. It has a slider-screen feature; which actually adapts to the modern cell phone trend. This feature is enhanced and will be evident through its 3.2” touch-screen; along with a sliding QWERTY-type keyboard.

This fascinating design makes the Samsung SCH-U940 fit for any age bracket. You can also add the fact that it can provide a 240 by 440 pixel color resolution. This is enough to make the shots look real. Moreover, the Samsung SCH-U940 also has a 2 megapixel built-in camera and video capabilities. It is even equipped with an auto-focus system that enables you to take shots with more ease.

Samsung SCH-U940 Design and Accessories

The Samsung SCH-U940 has so many amazing features it can boast about. It has a CDMA dual band feature with actual 3G support. Innovation has come a long way and the mobile industry has evolved more than a few times already. Additional features like its world clock, memo and calendar are very helpful tools for those who frequently travel.

The Samsung SCH-U940 has Multimedia capabilities a bit similar to the F700. Videos can be played via H.264, H.263 and MPEG4. It also guarantees formatting capabilities. eAAC+, AAC+ and MP3 capabilities would go with its music player features. Actual formatting is also very much possible.

The SCH-U940's QWERTY keyboard is also very easy to use when composing text messages. It is even more convenient because it has a touch screen feature that allows you to easily drag items easily. It is also equipped with a predictive text feature that will surely make your text compositions a lot faster than the usual rate.

The SCH-U940 can also be used for web browsing and sending emails. It is compatible with a USB and a 3.55mm HeadPhone Jack. You can connect to the outside world via Bluetooth (1.2 Stereo). It also has about 150MB of actual internal memory. A slot for a microSD type of card is also provided in case there is a need for expanded storage.

The Samsung SCH-U940 also comes with a Li-Ion battery that can stand up to 4 hours of talk time. Of course, if you will use the camera and video functions regularly, this would really drain the power very easily. Thus, it can run up to 370 hours when it is in stand by.

For video calls, you have the privilege of using its speaker phone, caller group and ring ID features. It also has an internal antenna. Thus, recording is also possible with the Samsung SCH-U940.

Summary of Samsung SCH-U940 Features

Network: CDMA Dual Band

Screen Resolution: 240 x 440 pixels, Active TFT 262,144 colors supported

Data: CDMA2000 1xRTT/1xEV-DO rev.0

Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB

Music: Music Player

Battery: Li-Ion

Camera: 2 Megapixel resolution

Messaging: SMS, MMS, email

Expansion Slot: microSD format

Software Features: Calculator, Themes, Calendar, Unit Converter, World Clock, Memo, Stop Watch

Other Features: Caller groups support, multiple numbers / contact, capacity of up to 1,000 names, Ring ID, Picture ID, Speaker Phone, Recording

Pros: The most outstanding feature of the Samsung SCH-U940 would be its video and music capabilities that you can easily format according to your taste. Aside from this, you can store up as many pictures and videos as you want since it has a microSD card expansion slot. This only means that memories are not that hard to store up with the Samsung SCH-U940. Another good thing would be its voice call feature that lets you view the person you are talking to. This would go with the 3G technology that the Samsung SCH-U940 is equipped with.

Cons: The biggest weakness of the Samsung SCH-U940 would be its dual band capability. This would mean that it's hard having this for travel purposes; especially if you will need roaming services. The usual now-a-days would be triband or quadband capabilities. This is because you are only limited to a number of countries you can use this in. If you are a frequent traveler, this is not advisable for you. You are better off with the ones that have triband and quadband features.

Overall: The Samsung SCH-U940 is therefore ideal because of the trendy fashionable style that it has; along with the wonderful features that goes with it. Its slim sliding-screen feature makes it very light to carry around. You can also have fun taking shots and videos. This is especially because you can take advantage of its formatting capabilities also. You can also compose text messages easily because of its predictive text feature. When receiving video calls, you will know immediately who's trying to contact you through its Ring ID and Picture ID. This is a good way to filter and prioritize your calls. It is even more amazing because the 3G technology that it has lets you experience the convenience of seeing the person you are talking to. This is very ideal for people who have loved ones who are frequent travelers. Seeing them is like having them near you when they call. The Samsung SCH-U940 is really convenient for everyday usage.

Sony Ericsson released during the last quarter of 2006 the EDGE capable brother to the W850; the W830 and the W830i. Both phones share the same functions and capabilities. The only difference is that the W850 is targeted towards the Chinese market and therefore comes with a Chinese keypad. The W830i is designed for the rest of Southeast Asia. In this light, this article will refer to the unit at hand simply as the Sony Ericsson W830.

As stated above, the W830 shares many of the same functions as the Sony Ericsson W850, including its looks, which will be much to a lot of people's chagrin, with the most noticeable difference being that the W830 is EDGE capable whereas the W850 only supports UMTS and GSM.

Sony Ericsson W830 Camera and Display

The Sony Ericsson W830 sports a 2.0 mega pixel camera that is not only capable of taking pictures for up to a maximum of 1600 x 1200 resolution, but also capture videos on the go. The lens on the W830 can zoom in on your subject to up to 4x digitally giving the user more flexibility when taking photographs. The user can then store edit and share their pictures right on the handset itself with the use of Photoalbum (MY Pictures). And the sharing doesn't end there as the Photoalbum feature makes it possible for the user to store more images or receive pictures from a computer or a digital camera, making it not just functional but also fun. Also, with the camera buttons situated at the top when the phone is held in landscape mode, the user would feel as though he or she is using a real digital camera and not a phone.

Videos on the Sony Ericsson W830 is captured in the now popular 3GP format and the quality is more than sufficient especially for a phone with video recording not regarded as a primary function. After all, the W830 is still first and foremost a Walkman phone. A nice and welcome inclusion with the handset is the VideoDJ feature which makes it possible for the user to edit and piece together various video clips.

Pictures and video clips are then displayed with the phone's beautiful and sleek two inch 262k TFT color screen at 240 x 320 pixels. The screen resolution is not much really but is more than enough for most purchasers, especially considering the many features of the W830.

Sony Ericsson W830 Design and Accessories

The W830 is a slider type phone with only the two inch display screen, the navigation pad, and the Walkman 2.0 launch button being the most prominent keys in front. Sliding the handset open is a cinch and can easily be done so with a single hand. With the W830 open then, the user is presented with the beautiful and ergonomically designed keypad. The different keys are nicely spaced out and can easily be operated. Not the same can be said though with the navigation key in front of the W830 which takes much more effort to operate. The Walkman launch key at the top of the navigation pad is situated too close to the button that one is most likely to accidentally push the launch button instead of the up button and vice versa. But all that can be easily overlooked against the sleek and youthful design of the W830. And with the navigation key hassles aside, the W830 does have a user friendly interface and menu that going through the phone's features can be quite easy and even first time users can breeze through it without much hitches.

The unit comes in two variants: the Precious Black and the Golden White. But it is most likely that the Precious Black variant will be the more popular among the two. For one, although both of the W830's color options are made with the same matt finish casing and are therefore both fingerprint resistant, it is the Precious Black one that can hide those smudges more efficiently,

Now, this article would not be complete when the Walkman feature of the Sony Ericsson W830 is not touched upon. First off, and greatly noticeable is the phone's crispy playback of audio files including codecs for MP3, AAC, and e-AAP+. With the W830's Walkman functionality, Sony Ericsson anticipated the target market wanting to fill up their handsets with tracks and so the Sony Ericsson W830 ships with one gigabyte of the Sony Memory Stick duo. This can easily be upgraded to as much as 4 gigabites via the W830's expansion slot. This means more music for the phone which will be a treat to listen to with the inclusion of exceptional sounding earphones included with the W830 unit.

Summary Sony Ericsson W830 Features

Weight: 116 g

Battery: Standard battery, Li-Po 900 mAh, Stand-by Up to 350 h, Talk time Up to 7 h

PROS: The Sony Ericsson sliding design is sure to attract a lot of people. Of course, one can easily get attracted with the phone's design and the Walkman 2.0 player is such a treat to work with. Battery life is more than sufficient. The inclusion of the EDGE network support is a great step up from its model W850.

CONS: A bit pricey though, the W830 would not fit most people's budget. The camera, although not necessarily that bad, is also not very spectacular.

Overall: Overall a nice package if not only for the price.

The mobile phone division of LG scores a big one with the LG Voyager. Tagged by many as the Apple iPhone killer because of its many advantages over the iPhone, expectations are already high, with iPhone aficionados' eyebrows raised even higher. But taking into consideration the functions of the Voyager versus the iPhone, it very well may be what could give Apple a run for its money.

First to be tested of course is the call functions of the Voyager. While call quality is overall good, for its price and hype, it does seem average. In fact, conference calling is lacking in the Voyager. The speaker independent voice dialing worked like a charm though. The speaker phone was also exceptional, with the sound coming out of the speaker heard loud and clear, although it would be better for the user to use the phone in its open position when using the hands free function as the sound diminishes once the phone is closed. But still, the sound comes out pretty decently. Call time is said to last for four hours and upon testing, a call lasted for considerably more than that which is good on anyone's book.

Using the LG Voyager's touch screen for messaging was quite a treat, but still it does not beat using the QWERTY keyboard for its speed. Doing so would require the user to open the phone though to reveal the “real” QWERTY keyboard. And such a shame as the onscreen keys on the Voyager looked very nice indeed. The phone also supports AOL, MSN and Yahoo for instant messaging and any new user will not have trouble figuring out how to do so with the Voyager. Aside from the usual text messages, the Voyager can also handle video and picture messages.

Music playback could not be any better on the Voyager and is in fact better than anything that Verizon Wireless ever developed. All the needed buttons can be found without having to open the phone and also has a lot of additional music playback functions. Scrubbing through a track may now be done so by dragging on the progress bar and was so needlessly fun that one may find himself scrubbing away just for kicks.

Music downloads on Verizon Wireless is quite expensive though and is trumped in this regard by iTunes much cheaper rates for music downloads for the iPhone. And although the Voyager has USB connectivity, transferring your tracks onto the phone won't start getting fun until you expand your memory with the Voyager being able to handle memory cards of up to 8 gigabytes.

The Voyager's GPS navigation also turned out very good and is one of the features that the Voyager can hold against the Apple iPhone. The GPS sensor was very strong even when indoors. Maps are easy to view and navigation loaded seamlessly and quickly. Try not to get lost though as the VZ Navigator may not be able to reroute you automatically. But a simple resetting and reloading of the Navigator should do the trick. But, be the navigation frustrating or not, the bottom line is the Voyager has it while the iPhone does not. That being said though, it could still benefit with some improvements.

Now, for its web browsing capabilities, LG Voyager does hold its own. The browser on this unit is very competent and pages are loaded without any problems. The iPhone's drag and fling navigation is admittedly better than that of the Voyager's, but a quick fix should be underway. But in any case, this little hitch can not be considered as the make or break moment in the Voyager's plight.

Of great interest to note is the haptic feedback function of the Voyager's onscreen QWERTY keyboard. This little function is not unlike the feedbacks on popular game consoles' controllers or game pads. What happens is the keyboard on the Voyager gives a bit of vibration making the user feel as though he / she is using a real QWERTY and not a touch screen one. While this may be just a fun factor to some, it does seem useful; for those who are new to typing on a touch screen.

LG Voyager Camera and Display

What came as a pleasant surprise with the Voyager are its camera functions. The images are rendered accurately, with rich and vibrant colors. Zooming in as expected brought about some noticeable noise in the pictures though, but it is the bane of every digital camera and camera phones in general and so is easily forgivable. But considering that the Voyager's integrated camera is only 2.0 mega pixels, the images that are produced by it can be more that what one might expect. A lot of image editing functions come with the Voyager and the QVGA video capturing capabilities fared very good as well.

Another nice feature that will be of great advantage over the Apple iPhone is the price. As of writing, the Voyager is listed at half the price of the iPhone and may very well influence the choice of many consumers.

LG Voyager Design and Accessories

The LG Voyager's design looks really cutting edge and would inspire a lot of onlookers to dream of having one as their own. Every little bit of its design screams high tech and its looks may be more than just a novelty or fad.

Summary of LG Voyager Features

Weight: 133 g

Battery: 950 mAh, Up to 4 hours talk time, Up to 480 hours stand by time

PROS: When considering the pros over the Voyager's competition, an obvious one would be the price for it is much cheaper while having a lot more functions. The onscreen QWERTY keyboard on the LG Voyager, although a bit smaller than that of the competition, is always a treat to use.

CONS: Music downloads over at Verizon Wireless is almost double the price compared to iTunes. And the call quality is somewhat average.

Overall: In conclusion, if you must choose between the LG Voyager or the Apple iPhone, the obvious choice would be the LG Voyager as it has a lot more functions while tagged only at half the iPhone's price.

We have yet another offering from Motorola: the Motorola V551. It is a clamshell type phone borrowing its looks from its older siblings like the Motorola V400. And lately it seems that Motorola has been rehashing the same designs over and over again that it gets hard keeping up with their handsets.

In fact there is not much difference between the V551 and earlier models except with regards to its functions and features. In a way, you could say that what Motorola is doing is a little like software updating rather than developing a completely different one. Bottom line is the Motorola V551 is everything we loved about the V400 up until the V600 plus what those others models lacked.

The issue with slow browsing speed with the V400's GPRS is answered with the V551's support of EDGE, making it as much as three times faster compared to the V400 when it comes to Web browsing. And with the V551's camera capabilities, sending photos and video clips is a breeze. A bit of gripe though is that the phone book duplicates an entry every time you store a different number for the same contact person. This means that if a contact on your phone book has three different phone numbers, the V551 will make three different entries for each. While this may be fine to some, it does get tedious when searching you phone book and it does fill up the allotted number of contacts easily.

A very welcome addition is the basic POP3 / IMAP4 email client. The V551 also has excellent support of the Bluetooth wireless technology. As a gaming gadget though, the V551 fared less than desirable. Although adequate and entertaining enough for passing time during long commutes, I reckon this to be not enough for the serious gamer. But not to take away from the V551 though, it is not of course what would be consumers will be looking for when trying out this handset.

Other features that consumers may find useful like the external picture caller ID for easier and generally more fun identification, a speaker independent voice dialing capability which is fast becoming a standard among mobile phones nowadays are unfortunately lacking with the V551.

Motorola V551 Camera and Display

The Motorola V551 comes integrated with a capable VGA camera that can take photos at different resolutions with the smallest being 160 x 120 pixels QQVGA, the medium setting at 320 x 240 pixels QVGA, and the largest image resolution is at 640 x 480 pixels VGA, with all settings coming out in 24-bit color at 16 million colors. When the V551 is in camera mode, the main screen display doubles as the viewfinder while also displaying information such as the phone's available memory, much like with standard consumer digital cameras. The navigation pad on the phone also acts as the 4x digital zoom control.

The use of the V551's digital zoom is not advisable though as it is digital and as such only makes a crop of the subject and enlarges it digitally much like when an image is enlarged on a computer. As a result, images become blurry and pixilated and generally not very good. That is unlike with an optical zoom wherein the lens makes adjustments to make the subject seem nearer, as though with the lens of a telescope. But as the mechanisms for an optical zoom would render handsets heavy and bulky, it would be a while before we see that possibility happening. Not to worry though as even without the optical zoom, images captured with the V551 camera is very decent and will be sufficient for general purposes.

Motorola V551 Design and Accessories

As earlier mentioned the Motorola V551 is more like an update of their earlier handsets such as the V400 and V600 and therefore comes in the familiar clamshell design. This is far from being a problem though as this design is indeed sleek and stylish that it deserves another incarnation. When the V551 is closed, some useful information such as caller ID, battery status and signal strength is displayed to the user via a cool monochrome screen with a blue motif. At 96 x 32 pixels, the information is displayed adequately and the blue backlight makes reading text easy on the eyes. Flipping the V551's top panel open reveals the beautiful main display which at sixty five thousand color capabilities gives off a warm and vivid aura. Relatively bigger than the external display quite for obvious reasons, the main TFT screen displays information as the ones on the external screen plus more. It is also customizable with various pre-loaded wallpapers and color themes.

Summary of Motorola V551 Features

Weight: 114 g

Width: 49 mm

Thickness: 25 mm

Network: GSM Quad band 800 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

Screen Resolution: (Main Display) 65,000 colors, TFT / (Secondary Display) Monochrome LCD, Blue (96 x 32 pixels)

Data: GPRS (EGPRS) Connectivity: Bluetooth, EDGE

Web Browser: (POP3, IMAP4, SMTP)

Camera: VGA Resolution

Messaging: MMS, SMS, PCSync

Battery: Lithium-Ion, 820 mAh, 220 minutes talk time, 225 hours stand by time

PROS: The Motorola has an overall great design and those familiar with their earlier models will feel right at home even with the menu navigation. Pictures are decent enough. The very low price tag is of course a plus in anyone's book.

CONS: The absence of some features like the picture caller ID, although not very crucial, may turn off a lot of the prospected market share.

Overall: If you are looking to buy a reasonably priced mobile phone without looking cheap and without scrimping on features, then look no further than the Motorola V551. As it is a mobile phone first and foremost, it does this job very well and whatever lackluster performance you might experience with its other features are secondary anyway, these may be easily forgivable and overlooked.

The Samsung SPH-M800 is a new type of mobile which is being prepared only for Sprint. It is indicated that it is, in fact, a North American version of the previously released European F490. This is because it has an array of features similar to the F490. This would go with its 2 megapixel camera, internet and Bluetooth capabilities among others.

Samsung SPH-M800 Camera and Display

The Samsung M800 is amazingly characterized by its significantly large, high-resolution and touch-sensitive display features. You will also see that there are only a limited number of keys in the front portion of the SPH-M800. Apart from being compared to the F490, it is also being categorized with the U940. It is indicated as being bit similar; but it does not have a QWERTY keyboard and it is also slimmer.

The Samsung M800 also comes with a touch screen feature. This is along with its 240 x 440 pixel resolution. It is also equipped with an active TFT of about 262,144 support colors. Thus, its 2 megapixel camera resolution comes with a built-in flash feature.

The SPH-M800 also has the 3G technology everyone is craving for. This ensures that its voice call feature will enable you to see the person you are talking to. Browsing the net is also made easier and a lot of fun. Numerous ways are provided; to allow you to reach your loved ones, friends and business associates very easily. This makes the Samsung SPH-M800very handy and convenient in everyday usage.

Samsung SPH-M800 Design and Accessories

The Samsung SPH-M800 features a 16:9 wide and 32” full-touch screen. This is along with its intuitive and perceptive user interface. It has a dual band feature. It also has an integrated 2 megapixel camera; with a CDMA of 800/1900 and a CDMA200 1xEV-DO connectivity. This is along with its Stereo Bluetooth and microSD capabilities.

The Samsung SPH-M800 also guarantees the conveniences of the 3G technology; as well as everything that goes with it. You will experience the practicality of having a high-speed internet accessibility; which would include the Sprint Music Store and Sprint TV. Aside from this, you will also have the assurance of the Bluetooth Wireless technology, which would include the Sprint Navigator for GPS location searches; and the A2DP Stereo Music Streaming.

The SPH-M800 video playback function is being supported by H.264, H.263 and MPEG4. This comes with real formatting capabilities as well. Its music player, on the other hand, is being supported by eAAC+, AAC+ and MP3. Like its video playback function, its music player also has real formatting capabilities.

The SPH-M800 is compatible with the microSD card. When composing text messages, it has the predictive text function that allows you to compose a bit faster than the usual rate. Hence, you can connect to the outside world via a USB or an actual 2.0 Stereo Bluetooth system. It also has an internal antenna.

Aside from its voice call attribute, you will also enjoy its speaker phone and recording features. This allows you to record your conversations, make voice memos and record other important things in your life. Its ring ID and picture ID feature is also a security measure to screen the calls you are getting.

The Samsung SPH-M800 also has GPS, JAVA and email capabilities. Its Li-Ion battery will provide you up to 4 hours of pure talk time. This is also equivalent to about 370 hours of standby time.
Its other useful features would include its calendar, alarm, unit converter, memo, stop watch and world clock functions. For its phone book, it can accommodate up to 1,000 names. It can also put in multiple numbers for each contact; along with a caller group support system. Thus, the Samsung SPH-M800 offers all the privileges of the modern world.

Summary of Samsung SPH-M800 Features

Network: CDMA 800/1900 MHz

Screen Resolution: 240 x 440 pixels, Active TFT 262,144 colors supported

Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB

Music: Music Player, eAAC+, AAC+

Camera: 2 megapixels

Messaging: MMS, SMS, E-mail

Expansion Slot: microSD format

Software Features: Calculator, Calendar, Alarm, World Clock, Unit Converter

Other Features: Stop Watch, Voice Memo, Speaker phone, Video Calling

Battery: Li-Ion, 4 hours of talk time, 370 hours of standby

Pros: The best feature of the Samsung SPH-M800 would be its 3G technology. This is because it allows you to experiences the ease and comfort of reaching out to your family, friends and business associates. It provides you with other means to transact and communicate with other people around the globe. With its email and Bluetooth functions, you can do these above-mentioned transactions for a cheaper price; or at no cost whatsoever. Thus, it is a known fact that roaming rates are a bit pricey. Emails would really be a practical alternative, especially if you will be sending long drafts or the like; and this is readily available with the Samsung SPH-M800 3G phone. Many people are actually drawn to the various features the SPH-M800 has.

Cons: The weakest feature of the Samsung SPH-M800 would be its dual band feature. Having a dual band is only allowing you to have a good signal for certain countries. Triband and quadband functions are even better because it lets you access up to 3 or 4 networks. A dual band can really restrict your signal in some countries. If you are a frequent traveler, this would really pose a big problem for you. If you have a good signal in Asia and Europe, you may have problems when you reach Australia. Nevertheless, if you are only into traveling to different states, but still within the country, this is not an issue for you.
Aside from this, no apparent reports of problems encountered with the use of the SPH-M800 has surfaced.

Overall: The Samsung SPH-M800 really combined practicality with a luxuriously designed mobile phone. It has everything you need cramped up. This means that you don't need to actually bring several gadgets when you go out. Just having the SPH-M800 is enough. A camera, a video, a GPS system, internet access, video calls and a music player among others; it's having everything in one slim package.

The Nokia 6630, released last 2004 is, along with the Motorola A1000, a Symbian based 3G capable phone. The Symbian operating system is a great solution for those in search of quick menu navigation, messaging and all around general operations in a handset.

The 6630 is of course Nokia's step towards taking on the future of cell phone mobility, namely the 3G network. 3G of course is the network of choice for many for high-speed data access, video streaming, and the feature that is creating quite a stir in the mobile phone community: video calling. A quick test of the video streaming capabilities would convert detractors of the 3G technology as one would find it almost seamless with minimal buffering required.

Using the 6630's video calling capabilities though is a different story and is not without its hassles. Although video quality is sufficient, setting up for a video call is quite tedious and beats the purpose of the phones supposed mobility. This is because the 6630 would require the user to hook up the PT-8 video call stand which in itself would need to be plugged into a power supply. Plus the PT-8 camera is not very portable as well. The 6630 also comes with the EDGE support, which is a feature aimed primarily to the constant travelers who need network support all across the globe.

Being a phone for the traveling business type though, the handset is a bit heavy, weighing in at 127 g, especially compared with other phones in its class. That is of course excluding the PT-8 video call stand which one would expectedly have to bring to be able to advantage of the 6630's video calling feature. The 6630 is a bit on the bulky side as well, which contradicts its main purpose of being a mobile phone that you can carry around without hassles. In fact it would make a hefty bulge in anyone's pocket. But to be fair, it is still by no means the heaviest among the mobile phones in its class.

The 6630 also comes with the Quickoffice software which is used primarily for editing documents and which can also be used for viewing email attachments.

One novel feature of the 6630 is the capability to be utilized as a modem when connected to a computer via its Bluetooth connectivity. Although not as fast as standard “home” modems, clocking in at an average speed of 40 kbps – about the same speed as a dial up network, it is more than sufficient for browsing through your mail and even downloading email attachments. And for data transfers from a computer to the 6630 and vice versa, a USB cable is supplied. These connectivity options are also very useful for when transferring mp3 encoded tracks and video files onto the 6630. Aside from mp3, the 6630 can also manage the popular audio codec among Apple users, the AAC audio file.

Nokia 6630 Camera and Display

The Nokia 6630 is equipped with a 1.3 mega pixel camera, which at the time of its release was quite the subject of envy for the competitors. The camera is quite good and can be likened to the VGA gadgets available nowadays. The 6630's camera in fact is an improvement over the ones integrated with the Nokia 7610 and the Nokia 6670 which at the time of their respective releases was considered to be one of the best in the market. Not only do images captured with the 6630 look good, but taking photos with it is also a breeze as the camera on the 6630 responds well and very quick, with none of the expected lag associated with camera phones. In fact the user can take a succession of photos with an approximate of just one second gap between shots. And if that is not enough, the 6630 also boasts of the sequential shooting function which offers shorter time intervals in between pictures.

Another function of the 6630 is of course the capability to capture video. But at only 176 x 144 pixels as the highest resolution, the videos do leave a lot to be desired. It is with this resolution though that the 6630 is able to record up to sixty minutes worth of video which is ok, except for the times when one must choose quality over quantity. In this case, Nokia could have given the user the option of recording video at a very high resolution (around 640 x 480 pixels perhaps) albeit on a much shorter duration. That would have rendered the 6630 more flexible.

Nokia 6630 Design and Accessories

With all the wonderful technology inside the 6630, what is outside is quite a disappointment. The overall dimensions and weight is forgivable, but the circular bottom part of the phone looks more like a design flaw and offers nothing in terms of portability and ergonomics. In fact the shape renders the 6630 hard to operate with just one hand - a must for added mobility, and would especially not be suited for users with smaller hands.

CONS: A big gripe about the 6630 is the need to attach the PT-8 video calling stand every time you need to take advantage of its video calling capabilities. Also the design of the handset is not very ergonomic and attractive and looks more like it was a design from a Hollywood B movie.

Overall: If you are looking for a 3G phone with a lot more functionalities, then you can not go wrong with the 6630. Being a Nokia, one may be rest assured of its user friendliness and good quality.
